Celebrating Earth Day: A Personal Journey from 1970 to Today with Granddaughter
As I picnic with my granddaughter, I still remember the
energy on campus that April day in 1970—the very first Earth Day. The world felt like it was waking up to the
importance of protecting our planet. Students gathered together, holding
handmade signs, planting trees, and sharing hopes for a cleaner, greener
future. Being in school during that historic moment shaped the way I see the
world and deepened my love for the outdoors.
That early experience sparked a lifelong passion for nature.

There’s something magical about camping—waking up to birdsong, feeling the cool morning air, and watching the stars appear after sunset.

Fishing, too, connects me deeply to nature; the quiet focus, the anticipation of a tug on the line, and the shimmering beauty of the water all create a sense of peace.

Every time I pitch a tent, cast a line, or hike a trail, I’m
reminded of those first Earth Day ideals: respect, curiosity, and stewardship
for the natural world.
Now, as a grandparent, I find immense joy in sharing this love with my granddaughter. We spend afternoons exploring parks, picnicking, and listening to the wind. I encourage her to notice the little things: the patterns on a butterfly’s wings, the way sunlight dances on a creek, or the earthy smell after rain.

These moments aren’t just fun—they’re a way to nurture her sense of wonder and responsibility for the planet, and a great time to relax from the modern world—a tech-away break.
Telling our stories about nature isn’t just nostalgic—it’s about sharing my love with my granddaughter and leaving a legacy of love for the planet. I tell a lot of stories on our adventurous nature walks. We even have a nature book journal where we document the beauty of our planet.

Looking back, I’m grateful that I was there when Earth Day began. But I’m even more grateful to pass on that spirit to the next generation.
