A Grandmother’s Heartache
My granddaughter just turned 18. As her grandmother, I wanted this milestone to bring happiness and hope. Instead, I find myself holding a sadness that is difficult to put into words.
My daughter left heartbroken.
As a mother, it hurts to see my daughter suffer. As a
grandmother, it hurts to see so much distance between my granddaughter and her
mother. I love them both, and I wish I knew how to help.
I believe the divorce, and what followed it, have played a
part in this separation. From my perspective, her father has not supported a
relationship with her mother or with the maternal side of the family. That is
my understanding.
Not having all the answers does not make the loss feel any
smaller. Four years is a long time to be apart. There have been birthdays,
ordinary days, and conversations that we cannot get back. I had hoped this
milestone might bring an opportunity for connection, but the distance remains.
I struggle with my granddaughter’s words, but I do not want
those words to become the whole story of who she is. I want to understand her
and what she is feeling. At the same time, it is painful to see how deeply her
mother was hurt.
The hardest part is knowing I cannot repair their
relationship for them. I cannot make my granddaughter welcome contact, and I
cannot take away my daughter’s heartbreak. But I can love them both and pray
for both of them.
My prayer is that one day there will be room for a
conversation—one in which they can each speak honestly and feel heard. I pray
that, in time, it might open a path toward healing and a restored relationship.
I do not know whether or when that day will come, but I continue to hope.
For now, I am a mother hurting for her daughter and a
grandmother missing her granddaughter. Both are true. Through it all, my love
for them remains.
I love you so much, Olive!
